The original book was about the benefits of lifelong learning. I remember when my grandmother was in an old people’s home, the home organised regular arts and crafts activities for the elderly residents. The objects and things that my grandmother made would be displayed in our house for a while and then get thrown away. Some things we have kept, like the small tortoise ornament that now hangs on my workroom door handle.
One of the craft activities I remember her doing was weaving together strips of colourful advertisement paper to make paper coasters and wall hanging ornaments. It was a simple activity but produced nice colourful results. The book reminded me of my grandmother and this particular weaving activity. I don’t think she would have ever considered paper weaving as ‘lifelong learning’ but there is something worthwhile and lovely in keeping one’s hands and brain busy. There is always the social aspect of making something with others as well. I know my grandmother really enjoyed the company of her friends when she was in the home.
