Category: R (watercolour wax-resist, ink drawing, and collograph printing, map folded. Relief printed, watercolored covers)
Year: 2017
Location: Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA
Artist: Claire Marcus
Altered pages from the Oxford Book of Edible Plants (de-accessioned from the Trexler Junior High School Library, Allentown, Pennsylvania) and the artist's paperback copy of Pamela Westland's A Taste of the Country (Penguin). One of seven new books created to date from these two volumes.
Both books were in poor condition and I wanted to give them new life. The colour illustrations from Edible Plants are a good match with Westland's text and its elegant line drawings. I have taught after school and summer programs at what is now Trexler Middle School in Allentown. Harry Trexler was a 1930s philanthropist whose Trust supports local cultural and environmental resources. I purchased the Westland in Cambridge during an extended painting trip after finishing in art school.
The watercolour wax-resist gives emphasis to the Taste pages and leaves some content legible. I collograph printed them with an object that reminded me of a vintage binding pattern, compatible with the subject matter. I used pen and ink to expand the Oxford composition.
