The altered books are in two sections following the structure of the original book, which was in two parts; ‘What is Modern Design?’ and ‘What is Modern Interior Design?’ The black and white images of the ‘modern’ objects and interior spaces are printed on good quality paper suitable for folding. The book has a typical old book smell, a combination of dust, tobacco, and vanilla.
The original book was ‘produced by the offset printing process. The text and plates were photographed separately from the original volume, and the plates rescreened. The paper and binding were selected to ensure the long life of this library grade edition.’
A box encases the two square books made using the ‘flower fold’. The books open out like accordions and cannot be ‘read’ in a conventional way but exist more to be experienced.
