The colourful cover was what attracted me to the original book. The title, The Kitchen House, was also intriguing. It made me imagine a story line unfolding in a large warm kitchen with a big table. Whilst dismantling the book, I came to realise that the book told a story about a relationship between two female slaves, one black and the other a white orphan. The four small books with punched out holes attempt to reconstruct the story that may have unfolded between the two. The readers are free to make their own connections and own stories by filling the many holes that cover the pages of the books.
